The Lioness of Puglia

Tours stopping in Altamura

Famous to be the City of the Bread (try to understand why), Altamura is located 50 km (31 miles) away from Bari and it’s really close to the border with Basilicata and then Matera.

The historic centre of the town is full of palaces, churches, and characteristic claustri (small, closed courtyards). There, you can find the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, built by Frederick II, amagnificent example of Puglia’s Romanesque architecture and Frederick’s elegant Gothic style.
Just outside the town, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Buon Cammino is another highlight.

In the countryside outside Altamura, there is the Alta Murgia National Park, where you’ll find the famous “Pulo”, a remarkable karst sinkhole roughly 100 meters/c. 300 feet deep.

In this area may fossils have been founded but there are two most important discoveries: the Altamura Man (a complete human skeleton dating to the Palaeolithic period) and 30,000 dinosaur tracks.
