Crossing the rugged heart of Southern Italy is far more than a simple bike tour; it is a true trans-regional enterprise through what many call “The Last Untouched Italy. This itinerary is designed for cyclists who crave the rare luxury of profound silence and the physical triumph that only grand climbs can provide.

Your journey begins among the century-old Sassi of Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site, where you will pedal away from civilization to immerse yourself in an epic adventure connecting two seas. Leaving ancient history behind, you will trace a pioneer’s route along the fertile Ionian coast and the golden sands of Policoro, the site of ancient Greek Heraclea.

But the true heart of the enterprise beats within the Pollino National Park. Here, amidst Italy’s densest forests and imposing mountain massifs, the modern world fades away, leaving space only for the rhythm of your breath and your chain. It is a route that challenges and rewards—perfect for road, gravel, or e-bikes—culminating among the jagged cliffs of Maratea, the “Goddess of the Sea,” where the crystal-clear waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea mark the finish line of your crossing.

Itinerary

Day 1 – arrival in Matera

Your journey begins in Matera, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Known for its ancient Sassi—dwellings carved directly into the limestone cliffs—Matera serves as the perfect gateway to “The Last Untouched Italy”.

  • Activities: The afternoon is dedicated tobike fitting and a technical briefing to prepare your gear for the trans-regional crossing ahead.
  • Dining: Enjoy a free evening to immerse yourself in local Lucanian cuisine within the historic center.

Day 2 – Into the silence of the Badlands

On your first official riding day, you will depart the rugged plateaus of the Murgia to enter the heart of the Lucanian countryside. The landscape transitions from stony highlands to more verdant surroundings before revealing the true highlight of the day: the Calanchi. These vast, clay “badlands” offer a cinematic backdrop of deep silence and lunar-like ridges, providing your first taste of the profound solitude this region offers. Overnight in a Masseria, a local farm holiday.

Distance: 64 km
Grade: easy to moderate.

Day 3 – A pioneer’s route to the ionian

This stage traces the ancient history of Magna Graecia as you descend toward the coast. You will reach Policoro, known in the 5th century B.C. as the Greek colony of Heraclea.

Historical Highlight: A visit to the Archaeological Museum of the Siritide is highly recommended to view artifacts from this region’s ancient pioneer past.

The Finish Line: You will spend the night at a seaside hotel, where the golden sands and the vast horizon of the Ionian Sea mark the completion of the first leg of your crossing.

Distance: 56 km
Grade: easy.

Day 4 – Towards the Pollino National Park

Leaving Policoro you will cycle through the orchards of the Ionian coast and start climbing towards the woods and peaks of Pollino, the largest National Park in Italy. Dinner on your own and overnight stay in Terranova.
Distance: approximately 85 km.
Grade: Moderately difficult course with a strenuous 10 Km climb at the end.

Day 5 – On the peaks of the massif

Today is a challenge stage but maybe is the most fascinating of the tour. You will enter the woods of the massif after a difficult climb and go through small villages and great valleys until you will reach the towns of San Severino Lucano and Viggianello. Dinner on your own and overnight stay at a warm, cosy inn.
Distance: approximately 48 km
Grade: challenge.

Day 6 – Maratea, the goddess of the sea

Once in Rotonda you will follow an amazing cycle path obtained from an abandoned railway. You will reach Lago Sirino and then cross the Valle del Noce, bringing you to the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Get settled in at your B&B or Hotel in the historical village. Dinner on your own and overnight stay.
Distance: about 80 km
Grade: moderate to challenge

Day 7 – End of the tour

Breakfast and transfer back to Matera.

Suggested extra day

Extend your stay in Maratea, the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian,” where the rhythm of the journey softens into pure Mediterranean pleasure.

Here, dramatic cliffs plunge into crystalline waters, hidden coves invite unhurried swims, and golden sunsets linger over the horizon. After the challenge of the mountains, reward yourself with days of relaxation on secluded beaches, gentle kayak explorations along the coastline, or private boat excursions beneath the towering Christ the Redeemer statue that watches over the sea.

It is the perfect finale — where effort turns into ease, adventure becomes contemplation, and Basilicata reveals its most luminous face.
